This is an introduction to the study of curves and surfaces in Euclidean 3-space. The main theme of the class will be various notions
of curvature, and their relation to the local and global properties of curves and surfaces.
In particular, we will cover the four vertex theorem, Fairy-Milnor theorem,
Gauss's Theorema Egregium, and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.
Prerequisites
Vector Calculus and Linear Algebra.
Texts
Instructor's Lecture Notes, and other handouts.
Homework
Homeowork will be assigned every Thursday and will be due the following Thursday through GT Canvas. Late homework will not be accepted.
Tests
There will be a midterm on Thursday Oct 2, and a final exam on Thursday, Dec 4, 2:40-5:30.
Attendance Policy
All students are required to attend all lectures.
Grading
The grade is based on homework (20%), midterm (30%), and final (50%). The cutoffs for each letter grade will be determined by the instructor at the end of the class; however, overall scores of 90%, 80%, and 70% will ensure at least grades of A, B, and C, respectively (the actual cutoffs may be lower but will not be higher).
