Course Description

An introduction to proofs in mathematics. Fundamentals of mathematical abstraction including sets, logic, equivalence relations, and functions. Development of basic proof techniques: direct, contrapositive, existence, contradiction, and induction. Introduction to basic proofs in analysis and algebra.

Prerequisites

Basic courses in Calculus and Linear Algebra.

Textbooks

Book of Proof by Richard Hammack, and Abstract Algebra by Thomas Judson, available for free on Canvas.

Homework

Homework will be assigned on Wednesdays and will be due the following Wednesday, by submission on Canvas.

Tests

There will be one midterm on Wednesday February 26, and a final exam on Friday April 25, 2:40-5:30pm.

Grading

The grade is based on homework (45%), midterm (20%) and final (35%). Students are expected to attend all lectures.
